First day at Kapadzera school

Today was our first day at Kapadzera school. We were joined by a new translator today, Amon, who replaced Owen since he was struggling with some of the translations. Lately we’ve been taking the Land Rovers instead of the bus since they’re so much easier to handle. It’s been very uncomfortable riding sideways in the back, but well worth the trip if we find mud holes! This school my partner is Jay, who has been the easiest to work with so far. We’ve all agreed that there’s always one person who matches up with our teaching styles. Our translator is Humphreys, who is absolutely hilarious.

It has definitely been interesting seeing how things work out at this school. It is our 2nd to last school, which means we’re winding down in this last week. We have been in pairs which have taught both students and teachers, and varied the curriculum as we went. It feels good at the end of the day to think about how well things went at the school and how often you had to reference the curriculum book compared to two weeks ago. We actually feel like pretty decent teachers! It also makes a difference having to teach with the language barrier. At this point, I definitely feel pretty accomplished.

Tonight Jay and I made dinner for the house since it was our day. We ended up experimenting with steamed rice, steamed broccoli, salt, pepper, butter, and cheddar cheese. It turned out better than we expected! We also made a fruit salad with mangoes, pineapples, and apples which we bought at the market. And when I say market, I mean MARKET. The place is insane. The best part of the meal, was that we stayed in budget. I can’t remember if I wrote about it earlier, but our first meal was a mess. We ended up going WAY over budget and had to pay for half of the house meal out of our pockets. Pain!

I also finished both my books (Jungle Lovers and New Moon) which is horrible, since I now have nothing to read for the next week or on the 14 hour plane ride home. Both AMAZING books, and I’m really kicking myself for not bringing the sequel to New Moon. I ended up reading both books in two days each. Days off are reading days!!

Two more days of school and Wednesday we have our final school until Saturday. Sunday, home!
