Today was the first day at Namitete school. It went almost perfectly. The day started really rainy, but by the time we had gotten to the school the sun had come out. We had a moment of breathing time on the bus (one of our coordinators is a yoga teacher) and it totally turned our day around. First off the bus the kids started speaking English (basic) and then before we knew it we had gone through morning songs and games without a hitch.
My partner Stephanie and I have the standard six kids this time and they are fantastic learners! We’ve had a few times where we’ve had to yell “chete!!” which means “quiet!”, but otherwise it’s been great. We powered through the curriculum this morning and had a very calm lunch for once, even though each class had at least 30 kids.
This is definitely the best camp we’ve done so far. Unfortunately, today was a national holiday in Malawi to celebrate the guy on the Kwachaa, so a lot of kids weren’t here. We’re a little worried there will be too many kids tomorrow!
Also, tomorrow is home-stay, so Jess and I are partners and we get to stay overnight in the village nearby the school. We’re hoping that since the kids knew so much English that the parents will, too, so hopefully it won’t be too bad. Just one night of no sleep! Coordinators said that at previous home-stays they slept with adults, kids, goats, chickens, etc. in the room. As long as no bugs climb in my sleeping bag, it should be pretty fun!! We’re also expected to help the family with chores in the morning (they go to bed at about 8 when it gets dark and get up at 5 when it gets light), so it should be a very eventful 24 hours! I’ll take lots of pictures for everyone.
I have become pretty sporadic with my updates these days – mostly when I find…
